Ho Chi Minh City University of Education 1. Foundation
Ho Chi Minh City University of Education was established on October 27th, 1976 by Decision No.426/Ttg signed by the Prime Minister. Before 1975, it was the Faculty of Pedagogy,
Sai Gon University founded in 1957. At present, the University is one of the two key Universities of Pedagogy in Vietnam. It was awarded by the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in 1986 a third class Labour Decoration and in 1996 a first class Labour Decoration.
2. Organization and Structure
The University has 17 Faculties: Mathematics - Informatics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English, French, Chinese, Russian, History, Geography, Vietnamese Language and Literature, Political Education, Psychology and Education, Primary School Teachers’ Training, Pre-school Education, Physical Education, National Defence Education.

4. Staff and Students
Among 417 teaching staff, 77 have Ph.D. degrees and 167 have Master''''s degrees and equivalents. Besides, there are 115 office staff and 52 High School teachers and laboratory assistants. The University has 13,394 students including 154 postgraduates and 600 practical High School students in the academic year 1999-2000.
5. The University''''s Mission
- To supply teachers with Bachelor''''s degrees for a variety of schools such as senior high schools, elementary schools and kindergartens.
- To train teachers, administrators and researchers in education with bachelor''''s, master''''s and doctoral degrees.
- To provide continuing and in-service training for teachers of different background in the education system.
- To study theoretical and experimental issues and apply educational and fundamental sciences in educational, social and economic activities for the development of Vietnam.
6. The University''''s International Relations
Foreign affairs of the University have been taken care of by the International Relations Department. The Department has assisted the University in establishing international relations with universities and international organizations in many countries such as France, England, the U.S.A., Russia, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg, China, Japan, Korea, India, Thailand, Taiwan, Cambodia and Laos.
International co-operation of the University covers the following issues:
- Graduate and postgraduate programs for teachers to get Master''''s and Doctoral degrees.
- Faculty exchange programs.
- International conferences and workshops.
- Short-term training courses for language teachers.
- Research on teaching methodologies.
- Teaching aids (equipment and materials).
Many co-operation projects have been successfully implemented by the University and international organizations such as AUF (of which the University has been a member since 1991), VIA (the U.S.A.), VVOB (Belgium), AVI (Australia), and foreign universities such as Rouen, Joseph Fourier, INALCO (France), Simon Fraser (Canada), Canberra, Sydney (Australia), Lakewood Community College (the U.S.A.), Guangxi Normal University, Beijing Language and Culture University (China), etc.
7. Research Activities
Scientific research is one of the most important activities of the University. In addition to teaching activities, lecturers from faculties are required to do research on education and methodologies as well as fundamental sciences. Lecturers are also encouraged to compile teaching materials and write course books to make considerable contribution to the betterment of education programs and to high school education.
Research activities are aimed to improve teaching quality and to boost the development of sciences and socio-economy through co-operation with other research centers and enterprises located in Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces.
Research reports and reviews written by university teachers and students are published in the Science journal, a quarterly journal of the University.
